Artist Statement:

Our world is a beautiful, fragile and uncertain place. The Small World Series seeks to provoke the viewer to see beyond our border lines and imagine a world where our distinct identities are cultivated and appreciated, but also synthesized to create a more dynamic whole.

There are 7 colors used inside the circle which reference the visible light spectrum, our 7 continents, and the diversity that makes our world complete.

With the addition of black and white, the 9 colors that make up the painting are linked to the 9 Enneagram Types which speak to the brokenness and beauty each of us bring to the world. Interestingly enough, black and white, often associated with binary thinking, were not included in the small world.

The only border line is the gold which is a nod to the Japanese practice of Kintsugi which repairs broken pottery with gold, making the piece more interesting and valuable because of its scars.

Let our love be the gold that binds us together.

“There's so much that we share, that it’s time we're aware it’s a small world after all.”
